Re-Envisioning Somerset Independent History/ Photo Series
* Jonathan Slade Cemetery
I photographed the Jonathan Slade Cemetery . This cemetery is consisted of about 40 gravestones. This cemetery was used until 1969. Jonathan Slade was born on June 13, 1744 in Swansea Bristol County in Massachusetts. His parents names are Samuel Slade and Mercy Buffum. He married Mary Chase. He had 10 children. He died November 16, 1811 at age 67. In my photographs, I photographed some of the symbols that were carved into the gravestones. I didn't know that the flying angle symbol means rebirth. The flower symbol means frailty of life. The hour glass means inevitable passing of time or life. The winged face means effigy or soul of deceased or soul in flight. The gravestones face west because the Slade family believed God will return towards the west. I found this topic interesting because of the old grave carvings. I told a story through the photos by photographing this Cemetery and the history of the old grave carvings on the grave stones. In this series, I focused on photographing at a close up shot and a wide shot of the whole cemetery. The two best photos for this series is photo number 15 and 16 because these photos are a close up of a angle face gravestone carving. I love the detail in each photo. I used my macro lens to photograph these two photographs. I used the law of thirds and focused on line, shape and texture. I edited some of the photographs in Photoshop to make the image brighter.
